A significant milestone in Malaysian legal reform on 4th July 2023, the Abolition of Mandatory Death Penalty Act 2023 officially came into force in Malaysia, marking a historic turning point in our criminal justice system.
This abolition reflects Malaysia’s commitment to a justice system that values not only accountability, but also mercy, rehabilitation, and second chances, aligning with global human rights standards while upholding the rule of law.
We are pleased to have Mr. Surendra Ananth A/L Anandaraju for sharing their insights on this landmark reform.

On 5th October 2022, the Federal Constitution (Amendment) Act 2022 officially came into force, introducing the Anti-Party Hopping Law, a pivotal step in preserving the integrity of Malaysia’s electoral process.
This historic amendment reflects the nation’s commitment to political stability and respect for the people's mandate, addressing long-standing concerns over party defections that undermine democratic representation.

In Episode 4, we explore the Employment Act (Amendment) 2022, focusing on the enhancement of maternity leave provisions, a significant stride towards supporting working mothers in Malaysia.
Effective 1 January 2023, Malaysia's Employment Act was amended to extend paid maternity leave from 60 to 98 days, aligning with international labour standards. This entitlement applies to all female employees, regardless of wage level. Additionally, the law prohibits employers from terminating pregnant employees or those with pregnancy-related illnesses, except in cases of willful breach of contract, misconduct, or business closure.
